Game text to speech

Text to speech for RimWorld

RimWorld tells its stories in letters, tooltips and backstories, often in small type on a big monitor. Corvo Reader reads any of it aloud in a natural voice, and because it isn't a mod, it works with any mod list.

What to box

Text worth hearing in RimWorld

  • Event letters
  • Quest descriptions
  • Backstories and traits
  • Mood and thought tooltips
  • The health tab
  • Research descriptions

Press CtrlShiftE and draw a box round any of it to hear it read aloud.

Your colony speaks in letters

Raids, visitors, trade requests and quests arrive as letters, and the detail lives in tooltips: a colonist's backstory and traits, the thoughts behind their mood, the health tab, research descriptions.

Players on the Steam forums find the text small at 1440p and 4K. The game has a UI scale setting in its options, and some players edit the scale in the config file for finer steps.

Read every letter with one key

Press Ctrl+Shift+E and draw a box round a letter or tooltip to hear it.

If letters open in the same spot on your screen, save that spot as a region and one key reads whichever letter is open.

Works with any mod list

Corvo Reader isn't a mod. It reads what's on your screen, so it can't conflict with your load order, and it reads text added by mods the same way it reads the base game.

Questions

RimWorld and Corvo Reader.

Does RimWorld have text to speech?

We haven't found a built-in option that reads letters and tooltips aloud. Corvo Reader adds it without a mod.

Does it read modded text?

Yes. If it's on your screen, it can be read, whichever mod added it.

Which display mode does RimWorld need?

Borderless or Windowed. In exclusive fullscreen, Windows keeps the game's picture away from other apps, so Corvo Reader can't see the text. Where to look: the game's options: a windowed or borderless display setting. Check your game's display settings, as the exact label can change between versions.

Is it free?

Yes. The free plan needs no card: standard neural voices for 20 minutes of narration a week. Paid plans start at $6.99 a month and add weekly premium voice minutes, unlimited standard voices, Summarize and Translate.
