Game text to speech

Text to speech for Pillars of Eternity

Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire voice part of their dialogue and leave a lot as text: scripted interactions, the journal, the cyclopedia and every book. Corvo Reader reads any of it aloud in a natural voice, without mods.

What to box

Text worth hearing in Pillars

  • Unvoiced dialogue
  • Scripted interactions
  • The journal
  • Cyclopedia and bestiary
  • Books
  • Tooltips
  • Loading screens

Press CtrlShiftE and draw a box round any of it to hear it read aloud.

Obsidian's unvoiced text

Both games voice part of their dialogue and leave the rest as text. Add the illustrated scripted interactions, the journal, the cyclopedia and bestiary, books, tooltips and loading screens, and a Pillars campaign is a lot of reading.

One key per conversation

Save the dialogue box as a region and one key reads the current line.

Box a cyclopedia tooltip or a book page with Ctrl+Shift+E to hear it.

Compared with the Pillars of Eternity text to speech mod

Credit where it's due: VaultDoc's free Text-to-Speech mod for the first game, built for his wife who has dyslexia, reads unvoiced dialogue, the journal, the cyclopedia and loading screens with Windows' built-in voices, and skips lines that are already voiced. If you play the first game and it suits you, it's a great option.

Corvo Reader needs no mod, reads on demand in both games (Deadfire included), uses natural AI voices, and works the same in your other games.

Questions

Pillars and Corvo Reader.

Does Pillars of Eternity have text to speech?

We haven't found a built-in option. A community mod adds it to the first game with Windows voices; Corvo Reader does it in both games without a mod.

Does it work with Deadfire too?

Yes. Corvo Reader reads the screen, so it works in Pillars of Eternity, Deadfire and any other Windows game.

Which display mode does Pillars need?

Borderless or Windowed. In exclusive fullscreen, Windows keeps the game's picture away from other apps, so Corvo Reader can't see the text. Where to look: the game's display or graphics options: windowed or borderless. Check your game's display settings, as the exact label can change between versions.

Is it free?

Yes. The free plan needs no card: standard neural voices for 20 minutes of narration a week. Paid plans start at $6.99 a month and add weekly premium voice minutes, unlimited standard voices, Summarize and Translate.
