AI Game Text to Speech vs Windows Voices vs Mods

The short answer

AI voices sound the most natural and read any text; Windows voices are free and work offline; mods cover one game each. Corvo Reader is live AI text to speech for the text on your screen, with no mods.

There are three common ways to hear a game's text read aloud on PC: the voices that come with Windows, mods made for one game, and AI text to speech that generates a natural voice from any text. They overlap more than the names suggest. A mod can use Windows voices; some mods ship AI-generated voice files; an AI reader can work alongside both.

So instead of ranking products, this guide compares them on two questions that decide how they feel to use: where does the voice come from, and how does the text get to it?

Where the voice comes from

Windows voices

Windows has text-to-speech voices built in, and they are what most game features and mods use. Osmodium's Pathfinder text to speech mod, for example, uses Windows' built-in speech system and says plainly that it contains no AI and no pre-baked voice files. Stellaris's built-in text to speech also reads with your Windows voice (see our Stellaris guide).

The upside: they are free, already installed, and work offline. The downside: many players find the classic voices robotic, especially over a long session.

Windows 11 does have much better natural voices for Narrator, which run on your device once downloaded (Microsoft's Narrator guide covers adding them). Other programs can't use them directly. Community tools like NaturalVoiceSAPIAdapter bridge the gap, and some mods point to it, but its author notes that Microsoft hasn't allowed third-party apps to use these voices and that the workaround could stop working at any time.

Pre-made AI voice packs

A second kind of mod generates audio in advance for a game's script and ships it as voice files. The results can feel close to voice acting:

  • The Planescape: Torment AI Voices mod adds AI voice acting to a game with over 800,000 words of dialogue, almost none of it originally voiced.
  • The Dragonfall Full Voice Pack on Nexus Mods voices 241 characters across 13,933 lines of Shadowrun: Dragonfall's Director's Cut campaign.
  • WotR AIVO fills in missing voiceover for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, with honest notes on its limits: voice packs only for one main character option, and only part of book events read aloud.

These are impressive projects. They cover the lines their authors processed, in one game, and they can't read text that only exists at runtime, like tooltips that change with your build.

Live AI text to speech

The third kind generates speech on demand from whatever text it is given, using a neural voice model. That is what people usually mean by AI game text to speech. It sounds natural, it reads anything (including text that is different every playthrough), and the same voice works in every game.

The trade-offs are real too. Natural AI voices are usually generated online, so they need an internet connection, and the best ones cost money to run, which is why apps that offer them tend to have usage limits or paid plans.

How the text gets to the voice

Built into the game

When a developer adds text to speech, it knows exactly what is on screen and when. That is the best integration you can get. It is also rare: see our list of PC games with text to speech built in.

A mod hooks into the game

Mods read the game's own text, so they can tell dialogue from tooltips and read new lines as they appear. The cost: one game per mod, usually a mod manager to install, and a game update can break them until the modder catches up.

Reading the screen

An on-screen reader captures what is visible and turns it into text with OCR. It works in any game and installs nothing into it. You decide what to read and when, rather than it reading automatically. And OCR reads what it sees, so very small or decorative fonts are harder to recognise than clean, larger text.

Where Corvo Reader fits

Corvo Reader is live AI text to speech that reads the screen. Press Ctrl+Shift+E, draw a box round any text, and a natural voice reads it. Saved regions read with one key, which suits the spots you check over and over: an event window, a dialogue box, a level-up pane. No mods, so nothing to break when the game patches.

One setting matters: run your game in Borderless Windowed or Windowed mode. In exclusive fullscreen, Windows keeps the game's picture away from other apps, so there is nothing for Corvo Reader to read. The setting is usually in the game's video or display options.

The Free plan gives you standard neural voices for 20 minutes of narration a week, with no card. Paid plans (Core $6.99, Plus $12.99 and Max $24.99 a month) add weekly premium-voice minutes, unlimited standard voices, and Summarize and Translate for long text.

Which should you choose?

  • Your game has built-in text to speech and the Windows voice is fine for you: use it. It is free and already there.
  • You want a classic RPG to feel fully voiced: look for an AI voice pack for that game, such as the ones for Planescape: Torment and Shadowrun: Dragonfall.
  • You play one game a lot and want text read automatically: a text to speech mod for that game is worth trying. Our CK3, Rogue Trader and Kingmaker guides compare them with Corvo Reader honestly.
  • You want one natural voice that works in every game, without installing anything into them: that is what Corvo Reader is built for.

You can mix them. A voice pack for the dialogue and Corvo Reader for the journal and tooltips is a perfectly good setup. If two readers speak the same text, turn one off.

Who this matters to

Voice quality isn't a luxury when you listen for hours. For players with dyslexia, ADHD or visual fatigue, a voice that is easy to follow is the difference between listening to a game's story and skipping it. If you are blind, note that on-screen readers like Corvo need you to see where the text is; our guide to screen readers for games covers the tools built for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI text to speech better than Windows voices?

It usually sounds more natural, which matters over long sessions. Windows voices are free and work offline. Try both and keep the one you can listen to longest.

Does AI game text to speech work offline?

Usually not: most natural AI voices are generated online. Windows voices and pre-made voice packs work offline.

Will an on-screen reader conflict with my mods?

No. Corvo Reader isn't a mod and doesn't change game files, so it runs alongside your mod list.

Which games does it work with?

Any PC game on Windows that shows text on screen, in Borderless or Windowed mode. See our game-by-game guides.
